This Month’s Guest Speaker: Jan Spilman, MEd, RCC “Chronic Sorrow: A Brief Introduction”
Jan Spilman, MEd, RCC is a mental health educator specializing in Chronic Sorrow, Compassion Fatigue and Enneagram workshops. She has a background in cardiovascular nursing and as a grief & trauma counsellor in private practice. Jan helps people-who-help to live well with the grief and traumatic stress of their personal and professional care-giving. Jan is also a family carepartner who has helped support a young nephew with a congenitally-narrowed trachea, cared for her husband for 7 years until his death from heart failure in 2004 and currently companions three friends with early-onset dementia.
The topic we’ll be addressing is, “Chronic Sorrow: A Brief Introduction”. We will look at the concept of Chronic Sorrow, those natural episodes of variably intense grief that arise again and again from the time of our loved one’s diagnosis until their death. (While this type of grief can affect both the person with the chronic condition and their loved ones, we will focus only on caregiver/carepartner grief this evening.) We will learn how CS differs from depression and grief-after-death, touch on CS characteristics and share one or two ways of living more comfortably with the grief. Those wanting to learn more can attend a full-day community workshop on May 30th, 2020 at the Granville Island Hotel in Vancouver.
Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting.
