This Month’s Topic: Media Coaching One on One
Sharing family stories can lead to awareness and an understanding of what it is like to live with a rare disease. But being asked to share your story with the media or at an event can be both flattering and terrifying at the same time. It is important to choose opportunities to share your story carefully.
Sue Robins will share insight into the media’s process of recruiting families for interviews, ideas for assessing requests for your story and practical media coaching tips. (Hint: don’t wear stripes on TV!). But telling your story is also a part of personal and family advocacy. The same skills useful for sharing with the media work when advocating for yourself or your child in the school system, the healthcare system and anywhere you need people to react with compassion and understanding. Having some tips and tricks in your back pocket can help us know what to tell who, and when.
Sue Robins is a writer and a mom of three – her youngest son is 15 and has a disability. She has experience being both in front of and behind the camera. Sue believes strongly in family leadership and that we can change the world through the sharing of our stories.
Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting.
New parents are always welcome.
