“How do we support our well-children” is a question that comes up frequently at the Rare Disease Foundation Parent 2 Parent Resource Network meetings. Parents are aware that their child who has additional medical and developmental needs requires more of their time. They are aware that this leaves the other children in their family in a unique situation themselves. Parents are amazing at providing care and love for all their children, but report the imbalance they feel in terms of time spent with each child, as well as the impact on the child themselves when they have a sibling with a rare disease. How does that child handle questions from others about their sibling? What is the impact on their sense of self and self-esteem? How does this impact their views about their own future?
In response to these questions and needs, the Ottawa Parent 2 Parent Resource Network, in partnership with Walking in my Shoes (WIMS), is planning a workshop for siblings and parents. The day will focus on the needs of siblings according to their age, and provide time for fun activities with their parents.
