The website for Dr. Larry Lynd‘s CIHR Emerging Team for Rare Diseases is now live. In April, Dr. Lynd and his colleagues received a $1.5 million team grant to investigate potential funding policies for treatment of rare diseases.
According to the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders, 1 in 12 Canadians has a rare disorder. These diseases are severe and chronic, and can be degenerative and life-threatening. Currently, treatment options for these diseases are limited and they can cost over $500,000 per patient for one year. These numbers are far above average drug costs for more common diseases. Dr. Lynd and his colleagues will investigate the question: “How much public funding should be spent on drugs for rare diseases?”
